Gout risk associated with excessive use of pearl milk tea

Bubble milk tea includes a lot of sugar and calories, therefore drinkers should avoid the danger of gout.

'I have an average of four or five patients with gout come to the clinic every month,' said Dr Victor Seah, an orthopedic surgeon at Parkway East Hospital in Singapore. These patients all consume bubble milk tea on a daily basis.

Gout is a painful disease that affects the joints. It is caused by elevated uric acid levels in the blood.

Uric acid is normally filtered by the kidneys and eliminated as urine. When uric acid levels are excessively high, needle-shaped crystals develop in the joints, particularly the big toe, causing inflammation and discomfort.

Symptoms often begin with tingling and rapidly escalate to severe pain. "Some patients report the feeling of being poked by numerous needles," Dr. Seah said. Even while the sufferer is at rest, he is in continuous agony."

"Gout typically affects the big toe joint, but it may also impact the ankle, knee, wrist, and elbow," he says.

Other symptoms include heat, edema, and joint discomfort. The big toe, knee, or ankle are the most frequently afflicted joints. The discomfort comes on suddenly, usually at night. The patient may be feverish.

Gout, according to Seah, may cause joint deformities, cartilage loss, arthritis, persistent pain, and stiffness if left untreated. Furthermore, uric acid crystals may form in the epidermis and soft tissues, producing painful lumps and sores that can get infected and harm the skin. Gout that is not under control may potentially lead to kidney stones. "In extreme instances, it may lead to renal failure," Mr. Seah adds.

Gout may be triggered by foods and beverages that contain glutamate. When glutamate is digested, it produces purines, which are subsequently broken down to form uric acid, according to dietitian Jaclyn Reutens, founder of the Aptima Sports and Nutrition Advisory Center.

Fructose (bad for your health) found in pearls, sugar, syrups, honey, fruit tastes, fresh fruit, and fruit juices may also raise your purine levels.

According to Reutens, "a medium to large cup of bubble tea contains between 15g and 42g of sucrose, containing 7.5g to 21g of fructose."

The repercussions of sickness may be serious, as in the case of an 18-year-old guy from Guangdong, China, who enjoys milk tea. The uric acid crystals in this person's fingers and feet are so thick that they are nearly "petrified."

According to rheumatologist Zheng Shaoling of Guangdong No. 2 Hospital, the patient was unable to walk or use his hands owing to extreme discomfort and arthritis. A week later, the adolescent was released. However, it is difficult to imagine that all of this difficulty is the result of consuming at least one cup of milk tea each day.

However, the effect of diet varies from person to person. As a consequence, Mr. Seah says, the risk of gout varies.

Another thing to consider is the quantity of water. "Drinking plenty of water may dissolve uric acid crystals, making it simpler to remove," Ms. Reutens suggests. Drink at least two liters of water each day. Drink two extra glasses of water if you're sipping milk tea. .."

"If you think you have gout, avoid eating purine-rich foods and beverages," Mr. Seah advises. To enhance uric acid excretion, drink lots of water. To decrease swelling and discomfort, apply ice to the affected joint.

According to him, patients may be given anti-inflammatory medications as well as medications that enhance uric acid excretion and decrease uric acid synthesis in the body. You should consume milk tea once a week to reduce your risk.

"Drinking too much bubble tea may lead to weight gain." "When sipping, ask for less sugar and pearls," Ms. Reutens said.
